Little Plaza: What’s on our mind.

Updated: Apr 11

It’s been a while since the last blog update. We have been doing some thinking.

At Little Plaza, we are passionate about creating a space where little ones can grow and find their sparks in various activities. We want our future community to have more in common in terms of passions and hobbies than what divides us. We start with the widely cited Piaget’s theory of cognitive development in children (1964), which has four stages: sensorimotor (birth to 2 years), preoperational (2 to 7 years), concrete operational (7 to 11 years), and formal operational (11 years and older). Every child is different, so like all models and theories, they act as a guide when we design our activities.

Senses is our theme for 0 to 2 years, where we focus on sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. Sight, hearing and touch are covered by “Dancing in the sling” for babies who are ready for the sling and not too heavy for the parent. We have a sensory light room, and “Little ones and Musician”. Taste and smell can be subjective and allergy sensitive. We are delighted with the space in Little Plaza for parents and little-ones to spend time together. The 0.5 Little Steps cover the first stage.

Discovery is our theme for 2 to 7 years, where the preoperational stage is classified as gains in language and symbolic thinking. We launched German play-date to trial a multi-lingual environment. We look to add French and Japanese playdates. Children can also develop their reading habits with our Little Reading Club. They can project their voices in the Little Singers with Monika. We also offer art sessions, Non-messy arts for different colours and shapes. Little fingers gyms strengthen their grips, and especially the 4th finger, should they want to become budding piano players.  This stage is also characterised by their egocentrism, and our “Little Show and Tell” helps them introduce themselves with confidence and learn about others. Higher self-confidence may make the first day of school more exciting or less daunting for some.

Curiosity is our theme for 7 to 11 years, where in the concrete operational stage, children become capable of more sophisticated and logical thought processes. They develop the ability to think logically about concrete objects, events, and situations in their immediate environment. At Little Plaza, we want children to be curious and ask questions. Little Plaza offers a Reading Club to review books to think logically about the storyline, Writing Club, which helps formulate outlines. Little Maths Challenge will explore their logic and reasoning. Everyday Science introduces Scientific Methods with kitchen food cupboard items to show Science happening in front of a child’s eyes. We are also developing outdoor activities with Earth & Nature’s Adventure to balance indoor and outdoor activities.

In summary, Little Plaza interpreted Piaget’s model in developing our activities with a mission to build an interesting, inspiring, and insightful environment for child development. The age ranges are for guidance only as everyone is different. The best part of all this is for the parents and child to experience and grow together.
