Preview for the Junior group aged 4 to 6.
Educational robots are widely available. The aim of the Robotics Club is to use the educational robots to their full potential, which means eventually letting the child explore all the possibilities in robotics.
The VEX 123 is a very simple robot with 5 buttons, a "camera", speaker and two wheels. It has a built in accelerometer. A child can familiarise with a few sessions. The next level, children can learn the basics of programming which a series of cards. They can explore functions and there are space for 10 cards. Children can start programming robots to sequence a series of actions and adding functions to create behaviours. The third level is to move onto a graphical onscreen programming so children can see how programming concepts can abstract from physical cards to blocks on the screen and eventually lines of code.
At McRobotface Robotics club, we designed everyday scenarios for the children and their parents to try and solve with the robot.
Every child learns at a different rate. The junior group gives children opportunity to discover robotics and programming which will lead them to enjoy the senior group which is to build robots. Find out in our next blog update for a preview of the senior robotics club from aged 7 to 13.
